In-Sight: “The World’s Most Beautiful People”

People magazine has just named Beyoncé as “the world’s most beautiful person,” complete with a cover-page photograph intended to verify the decision.

Why do we keep expecting the fallen world to produce what it never can—namely, a definition of beauty that is more than “skin deep?”  I have absolutely nothing against Beyoncé, but our souls shrivel like raisins in the sun when only the “bright and beautiful” are elevated to such heights.

Today, I want to tell you about a nominee for “the world’s most-beautiful person.”  Her name was Violet Ganelle Thomas (1932-2006)—a diminutive woman who would never have been considered by People magazine.  Her physical appearance and even her mental abilities fell below the fallen world’s standards.

But, oh, my!  How blessed we all were to be able to look into her beautiful face, and receive such happiness from her smile, such joy from her eyes, and such love from her heart.  Her picture is on our refrigerator, and we see it almost every day.

Our refrigerator door is the place to post our choices for “the world’s most beautiful people”—our son (John), our daughter (Katrina), our grandchildren (Zoe and Isaac), our son-in-law (Chris), our extended family members living all over the place, and our many friends now put into a love collage spanning more than 40 years.

The door is full of “the world’s most beautiful people.”  I’ll bet yours is too.  We don’t need to buy the current edition of People to know who they are.  We see them every day.

I’m posting this on our son’s birthday, whose beautiful face I have near where I am writing these words.  Happy Birthday, John!   We love you!  Dad and Mom.
